I have a SuperMemo course on a CD with the SuperMemo UX program that I can’t install. What can I do in this situation?
SuperMemo courses available on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM were created for legacy applications, such as Multimedialne SuperMemo or SuperMemo UX, which have not been supported or offered by SuperMemo for many years. Between 2018 and 2020, we enabled Users to migrate to the new SuperMemo.com platform, with full transfer of access to their existing courses and learning progress. After 2020, SuperMemo UX stopped being supported and migration is no longer possible.
In practice, it is still possible to use such courses if they were installed in the past on a Windows system and this environment has not been changed or updated by the User. In most cases, however, it is no longer possible to reinstall courses that were once sold with SuperMemo UX, as they were copy-protected. For this reason, old, often heavily used SuperMemo UX CD-ROMs or DVD-ROMs, for example resold on auction websites, may no longer work.
To the best of our knowledge, SuperMemo is the only company – a software publisher – that is so customer-focused that it offers its clients the possibility of free upgrades to current versions of the software and courses even after many years (the company has been publishing software since 1991). In most cases this means moving to a completely different level of content and functionality. With other producers, the standard is that either the software is now only available as a subscription, or its normal “lifespan” ends after a few years due to inevitable technological changes, and access to the current version requires purchasing it again at full price (see computer games, office software, etc.).
What can you do?
- If you have just made such a purchase, please file a complaint or request a refund with the seller (e.g. the online bookstore or auction platform) within the time limits set out in the store’s terms and conditions or applicable consumer law. SuperMemo is not responsible for archival versions of SuperMemo products in old technologies that were purchased anywhere other than directly from SuperMemo.
Until 30 November 2025, you can contact us if the course was purchased directly from SuperMemo and you have proof of purchase – please send us a message via the Contact – SuperMemo form and we will present the available options.
From 1 December 2025, requests concerning the purchase of the above-mentioned versions of the program will no longer be considered.
Why are we no longer exchanging older versions of SuperMemo?
For over 5 years, all our products have been available exclusively via the supermemo.com service and apps.
For many years we offered free replacement of older versions of SuperMemo, and later support only for customers who could provide proof of purchase. Due to the large number of requests concerning software that is even 10–20 years old, often bought second-hand or without any confirmation of origin, we have now ended this process.
It is important to remember that the statutory consumer protection period (statutory warranty) is 2 years, and a perpetual licence gives the right to use the program in accordance with the terms and conditions in force on the date of the product’s release. It does not, however, include an obligation to provide free upgrades or servicing after many years and in the face of significant technological changes, especially those that are independent of the software publisher, such as changes in operating systems, hardware, etc.
In the interest of our customers, for over 30 years we have been trying to maintain continuity in their learning processes by offering migration between successive versions of our software. This has always required cooperation from both sides: following our announcements and being ready to move to a new platform at the time when such migration is available.
We would like to thank all users who have been with us for many years and invite you to use the new SuperMemo platform and to subscribe to our newsletter, where we regularly offer discounts of up to 40%.
