What is self-assessment in SuperMemo?

In SuperMemo, it’s primarily you who evaluates your answers. Instead of automatic grades or points, we use a self-assessment system that allows you to consciously track your progress and adjust your learning pace.

After each answer, click “Check” and compare your response with the model answer. Then rate yourself by choosing one of three options:

  • I know (green face/emoticon) – your answer was completely correct and given confidently.
  • Almost (yellow face/emoticon) – your answer was close to correct, or you weren’t entirely sure.
  • I don’t know (red face/emoticon) – you didn’t know the answer or it was significantly different from the correct one.

How you rate yourself affects how the SuperMemo method works – the algorithm will schedule your next review at the optimal time before you forget the material.

Self-assessment mainly applies to Q&A-type exercises (question and answer). In other types of exercises (e.g., multiple choice), the app automatically evaluates your response, but you can manually change it – for instance, if there was a typo or you clicked the button by mistake.

Remember: the effectiveness of the method depends on honest self-assessment and consistency. The SuperMemo algorithm works best when you learn regularly and follow the suggested reviews.
