Language learning today is less and less often about filling in grammar tables or mechanically clicking through one answer after another. Users expect more naturalness, fluency and contact with living language. That is why SuperMemo has introduced Live mode – a new feature currently available on learn.supermemo.com, and coming soon to mobile apps, which lets you talk to your language course almost like to a tutor.
This is no longer just another chatbot for short dialogues on a specific topic. Live combines SuperMemo’s experience in designing language courses with AI technology and the intelligent review method. The result? Learning that feels more like a real conversation with a tutor, where you do not wait for the answer to load, but receive it instantly, together with an assessment and possible support.
What exactly is Live mode?
Simply put: it is a new way to work with a language course. Instead of reading questions and typing answers, you listen to the course and respond out loud. The conversation flows smoothly, without unnecessary pauses or the need to keep looking at the screen.
This is a very important change, because traditional language learning often stops at the stage of word recognition. The user sees a sentence, understands it, but does not speak. This is a common weakness of apps based on gamification. And yet real communication requires active language use.
Live mode shifts the focus of learning precisely towards speaking and listening. As a result, contact with the language becomes more natural and closer to real-life communication situations.
Why is conversation so important in language learning?
Many people know this problem: they understand English, Spanish or German, but struggle to speak. Not because they do not know the words. The problem is the lack of automatic language reactions.
The brain needs to learn how to move quickly:
- from hearing a question,
- to understanding the context,
- and then to creating a response.
This is a process that cannot be trained through reading alone. Active language use is needed.
Live was designed precisely with this mechanism in mind. The course asks questions. You answer out loud. Without overanalysing or stopping at every word.
Learning without constantly looking at the screen
This is one of the most interesting changes currently emerging in language education. More and more people are tired of visual overload and constant clicking.
Live mode partially breaks away from this pattern.
You can:
- listen to questions,
- answer out loud,
- look at the screen only when you need to.
This makes learning feel more like contact with a tutor than a classic in-app exercise. In addition, the Live mode interface gives a preview of what we are preparing for other courses/the entire app: dark mode.
AI in the service of practical learning
There is a lot of hype around artificial intelligence in education today. The problem is that the mere presence of AI does not guarantee effective learning.
In SuperMemo, Live mode was not built purely as a technological novelty. The feature is based on years of experience in designing language courses and knowledge of how memory works.
Here, AI is responsible for more natural interaction, but the whole process is still supported by SuperMemo’s intelligent review method. As a result, the user not only talks, but also consolidates what they learn.
Where does Live mode work?
At the moment, the feature is available on learn.supermemo.com in:
- the No Problem course series,
- private courses.
This is just the beginning. Live will soon also be available in more course series and mobile apps for iOS and Android.
How do you start Live?
The whole process is very simple.
All you need to do is:
- open a course on learn.supermemo.com,
- click the “Live (BETA)” icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen,
- listen to the course questions and answer out loud.

Who is Live mode for?
The people who will benefit most are those who:
- understand the language better than they speak it,
- want to practise fluency,
- learn on their own,
- need more frequent contact with speaking.
It is also an interesting solution for people who do not have regular access to a tutor or want to increase the number of active language interactions between lessons.
In practice, even a few minutes a day can help break the speaking barrier.
Early BETA access – what is worth knowing?
Live mode is currently available in BETA. This means that the feature is still being developed and some imperfections may occur.
These may relate, among other things, to:
- accent recognition,
- moving on to the next questions,
- or how assessments work.
However, this is a natural stage in the development of new language technologies. Importantly, the feature is being continuously developed and gradually improved based on user experience.
Access and limits
Live mode can be tested as part of:
Currently, early BETA access is subject to the following limits:
- 5 minutes per day
- and a maximum of 20 minutes per month.
[UPDATE]
As of June 1, we have increased the early access limits to:
- 15 minutes per day
- and a maximum of 1 hour per month.
Soon, we will make it possible to increase these limits.
Is this what the future of language learning will look like?
There are many signs that this is exactly the direction language education is heading in. It is becoming less about passively “going through material” and more about active contact with the language.
Users want to:
- speak,
- react,
- hear natural language
- and learn in a way that is closer to real communication.
Live mode fits exactly into this trend. It does not replace the entire learning process, but it changes its most practical element: moving from knowledge to real language use.
