Main menu

The description of the main menu presented below refers to the authoring mode of SuperMemo. If your main menu contains only the File option, press Ctrl+Alt+F12 first.

The following menu items can be found on the main SuperMemo menu bar:

File - open a submenu with various operations on system files

Edit - (note, that the submenu contents of this menu item depends on the currently active window).

Add a new item - add a new item to the knowledge system. This option will add the new item to the hook node of the current category in the Contents window. It will also load the item with the default item template specified in Tools : Options : Appending : Default Item Template or in Tools : Categories.

Add a new topic - add a new topic to the current Contents category.

Append new items - add new items continuously with Esc used to move from the question window to the answer window and, finally, to the next added item (in the same manner as in earlier versions of SuperMemo).

Stop appending items - used to stop adding new items with Append new items.

Delete element - delete the element currently displayed in the element window.

Edit first question - edit the question text.

Edit first answer - edit the answer text.

Edit texts - turn all text and sound components to editing mode.

Menus : Element - open the element pop-up menu.

Menus : Component - open the current component pop-up menu.

Menus : Contents - open the Contents window pop-up menu.

Menus : Browser - open the current browser pop-up menu.

Menus : Registry - open the current registry pop-up menu.

Search - open a submenu with access to various registries


All - proceed with all stages of learning: outstanding material, new material and final drill (in the same manner as in earlier versions of SuperMemo). In the first stage, repetitions scheduled for the current day and all preceding days are executed. In the second stage, new elements are memorized (if available). In the third and final stage, final drill is executed in which all elements that scored a grade below good (i.e. 4) are repeated as long as it takes for all of them to score at least good.

Outstanding material - proceed with repetitions of the outstanding material (in the same manner as in SuperMemo). Repetitions scheduled for the current day and all preceding days are executed.

New material - memorize pending items.

Random learning - learn new elements by randomly reviewing the entire knowledge system

Final drill - repeat only elements scheduled for final drill

Cut drills - delete items scheduled for final drill (i.e. the last stage of Learn : All).

View - open a submenu with various element browsers


Options - open a tabbed dialog with options of SuperMemo.

Workload - display the number of items scheduled for repetition on particular days and months.

Mercy - reschedule outstanding items in a selected period of time

Categories - change the attributes of idividual categories such as name, template, etc.

User : Analysis - display matrices and graphs illustrating the progress of the learning process.

User : Generate report - generate a text file with most important statistics of the learning process.

Randomize - randomize the final drill queue or the pending queue. This way you can pass final drill in a random sequence or learn the new material at random.

Random tests - run random tests on particular element subsets (e.g. all memorized items, all pending items, etc.)

Testing - test your students on selected subsets of a given knowledge system. All items included in the test should be items designed for automatic testing. For example: spelling test, drag-and-drop test, multiple choice test, etc.

Modify in subset : Set original sound names - change the text in sound components in a selected subset of elements to the original name of the sound registry member associated with the sound component

Modify in subset : Copy component texts - copy texts between components in a selected subset of elements

Modify in subset : Change keep in lexicon - change the status of Keep in lexicon in text components of a selected subset of elements (e.g. to eliminate a certain text field from contributing to the lexicon).

Modify in subset : Change display at status - change the Display at status of a selected component in a selected subset of elements.

Modify in subset : Change size - change the size of selected components in a selected subset of elements

Window - open a submenu with various windowing options


Front page - open the help file starting with the front page

Contents - open the help file starting with the table of contents

Help in <language> - open a help file in a given <language> (if available)

Tip of the Day - run Tip of the Day with useful tips on using SuperMemo

System data - display a dialog with the path and the total size of the knowledge system (only the size of the primary storage is considered)

Address - address, e-mail address and web site address of SuperMemo World
