98
- Create a new directory in your computer in which you will
keep all files used by SuperMemo. For example, create a directory c:\sm98 on your
drive C:
This is how you can create a directory c:\sm98
in Windows:
- Double-click the icon My Computer on your desktop
- Double-click the icon (C:)
- Choose File : New : Folder on the menu
(note that a new folder will have been created ready to accept a new name)

folder: New folder (or New folder (2)), etc.
- If the computer says Cannot rename ..., you must
have already created folder c:\sm98
|
- Download SuperMemo 98 from SuperMemo Store
This is how you can download SuperMemo 98:
- Go to SuperMemo 98 page at
SuperMemo Store
- Click Order
- Fill out the order form (remember to correctly fill out the
billing address which should be your cardholder address, not your current residence
address)
- Click Place a secure order
- Click SuperMemo 98 download icon
- Choose Save when your browser asks you if
you want to Open or Save the file to be downloaded
- In the File Save dialog box go to the directory created in

e.g. c:\sm98\sm98zip.exe
|
- Run the file sm98zip.exe, e.g. by double
clicking its icon in Windows. Once you run it, it will create the file sm98.exe which
is the proper SuperMemo program
This is how you can quickly run the SuperMemo
installation file downloaded from the Internet:
- Click the button Start on the taskbar
- Choose Run on the menu
- Type in the name of the file. In our case it is: c:\sm98\sm98zip.exe
|
- Add SuperMemo icon to your desktop (or any folder of your
choice) by specifying the path to sm98.exe
This is how you can add a SuperMemo icon to
your desktop:
- Minimize or close all applications (e.g. you can right click
over the Windows taskbar and choose Minimize all windows)
- Right click over the desktop area (or within the destination
folder)
- Choose New : Shortcut (Windows will create
a new icon of your desktop entitled New Shortcut and will open a dialog box with
some questions to answer)
- Type in the command line. In our case it would be c:\sm98\sm98.exe.
If you downloaded SuperMemo to another directory, the path may differ. For example,
if you downloaded sm98zip.exe to d:\supermemo, your command line should
look like this d:\supermemo\sm98.exe
- Click the button Next in the Create
Shortcut dialog box
- Type in the name under Select a name for the shortcut.
For example, type in SuperMemo (this way your icon will be called SuperMemo)
- Click the button Finish (note that a new
icon has appeared on your desktop with the name chosen earlier)
Now or in the future, you can double-click the created icon
to run SuperMemo.

need it again. If you lose it, you can always get it from us by writing to SuperMemoMail. You should input the password
using File : Registration :
Input password. Alternatively, you can just use SuperMemo for a day or two and it
will at some point ask you to input the password
Installing help
SuperMemo Help provides detailed instructions for using
SuperMemo and a number of overviews useful for the student. You can either use SuperMemo
Help on-line at www.supermemo.com/help or you can download a 2 MB

articles available from SuperMemo Website).
This is how you can install SuperMemo Help for viewing it
off-line:

This will create the help file in the directory bin (e.g. c:\sm98\bin\smhelp.chm,
etc.)
- Run SuperMemo 98

Installing SuperMemo 98 over earlier
installations
This is how you can install SuperMemo 98 over SuperMemo 8
downloaded from the Internet or installed with SuperMemo 8 CD-ROMs such as Advanced English, Deine
Chancen, etc.
- Download SuperMemo 98 from SuperMemo Store and save
the downloaded file sm98zip.exe in your SuperMemo 8 directory (usually c:\sm8
or d:\sm8)
- Run the file sm98zip.exe, e.g. by double
clicking its icon in Windows. Once you run it, it will create the file sm98.exe which
is the proper SuperMemo 98 program
- Rename file sm8.exe to sm8.old to make
sure you never run SuperMemo 8 by mistake
- Rename file sm98.exe to sm8.exe. This will
effectively supplant old SuperMemo with the new SuperMemo
- Once you open your collections in SuperMemo 98, they will
automatically be upgraded. Only the size of windows may change slightly. You can adjust
the size and save the new layout with Ctrl+Shift+F5
- Within one business days since ordering SuperMemo, we will
contact you with instructions how to input the password needed to continue your work with

Frequently Asked
Questions
(Peter
Cool, the Netherlands, Oct 31, 1998)
Question:
During an attempt to install SuperMemo 98 I have received the following two messages:
- Cannot write to sm8.ini (I have copied sm98.exe to
my SuperMemo 8 main directory)
- This control requires version 4.7 or greater of
comctl32.dll
Answer:
The problems is with your comctl32.dll library in Windows. Old Windows 95
installations may contain an earlier version of this library. Please use the URL listed
below to download a free update (about 500K; ver. 4.72). This will not only let you run
SuperMemo but will also improve stability of other W95 and NT applications

Question:
I am using the Japanese mix but I'm not getting Japanese characters, but English
characters. I copied the fonts called hiragana.ttf and katakana.ttf from
the sm98\systems\... folders to my d:\Windows\Fonts folder. Is there
something else I have to do to have the fonts available in Windows 95?
Answer:
Yes. Instead of copying fonts you should install them. In Windows 95, use Control
Panel : Fonts : Install New Font. In the Folders panel, choose the location where
your TTF font can be found (sm98\systems\...)
